priest wins appeal
Fr. Thomas Gill, the Cape Town priest who was the first to be penalised under South Africa's recent racial legislation. has successfully appealed against his conviction.
In March of this year Fr. Gill was convicted of officiating at a marriage ceremony between a European and a woman described as being " slightly coloured," so contravening the Mixed Marriages Act. He was fined £20.
Now the three judges of the Cape Town Supreme Court have unanimously set aside the conviction.
