ANOTHER FRENCH AGENCY VATICAN RUMOUR

Front Our Diplomatic Correspondent he latest of the curious stories about. the Vatican, spread by the French agency (A.F.1.), suggests
that the British Minister at the Vatican has made representations over the attitude of the Spanish Bishops.
According to the account, the British Government fears the possible effects of an anti-democratic and anti-British feeling in the Spanish Hierarchy in reinforcing the position of Franco. This strange story goes on to affirm that ihe Vatican has asked for a report from [he Nuncio in Madrid. The latter has replied that there are differing points of view among the Spanish Bishops. but some of them are prepared to welcome an evolution towards democracy.
in repotting the reply to the British Government, the Vatican has given assurances that it will do all in its power to prevent the Catholics front taking an attitude unfavourable to Britain and the United Nations.
Practically all the A.F.I. stories from the Vatican have been proved to be without any foundation, and his 'meet one sounds even more absurd than its predecessors. The question is: What is 4his official agency of the Provisional French Government getting at ?
