The Duke of Norfolk added his weight to protests about plans to make a film about the sex life of Jesus Christ in this country. in a letter to the Prime Minister, the Duke challenged Mr Callaghan's silence on "this studied affront to Christendom". Other protests have come from Dr Immanuel Jakebovits, the Chief Rabbi, Salim Azzam, the General Secretary of the Islamic Council for Europe and Archbishop Athenagoras, leader of Britain's 200,000 Greek Orthodox Christians.
Replying to such complaints Mr Callaghan said he would count himself among those who would be deeply offended by such a film.
The Vatican newspaper, L'Osserratore Romano has praised all the efforts which have been made to prevent production of the film.
