A SUNDAY IN KENT'S HOPFIELDS

Keywords: Yalding, Horsmonden, Miss

The Bishop of Southwark's busy day in the Kentish hopping centres began early last Sunday. On the previous evening Mgr. Amigo travelled to Staplehurst, where he said Mass next morning at the convent. Later he was present during Mass at Skinner's Farm, from which point he went to Bell Common, Five Oak Green, and later to Horsmonden. After lunch there was another itinerary : Bull Common, Hunton; Buston Common, Yalding, and Mays' Farm, East Farleigh. At the last-named place his Lordship expressed his thanks to Mr. Stewart Mays for offering every facility to the Hop Mission.
Accompanied by Frs. Arthur, Clement, Malacky, and members of the mission working party, the Bishop was later entertained to tea by Mr. and Mrs. Clement P. Jukes at the Parsonage, Yalding.
The Franciscan Hop Mission continues its good work. Yet another centre has been set up this year, at Five Oak Green. The mission this year has been composed of the following workers. Five Oaks Green: Fr. Arthur, Miss Barnett, Miss Goldsmith; Paddock Wood : Fr. Malacky, Miss Kitcat, Sister M. Elizabeth (Lambeth Nursing Institute); Horsmonden : Fr. Anthony, Miss Sloper, Miss de Lagen; Brenchley: Miss M. Hinds, Miss Samuelson; Staplehurst: Fr. Pascal, Mrs. Wise, Miss Leather; Yalding: Fr. Clement; Mr. Burke, Miss Sadler; Wateringbury: Fr. Eric, Mr. C. P. Jukes, Mrs. and Miss Reid, Miss Baldwyn.
