Rare degree at Louvain
JAAK SYNAEVE, a Belgian
White Father. has been granted the rare degree of Master of Theology at Louvain University for a brilliant thesis on "Newman and Holy Scripture."
It is the tooth time since Louvain was restored after the French Revolution that this degree, the highest theological award in continental universities, has been conferred. Fr. Synaeve's work will shortly be published in England by Blackwell's,
Mgr. H. Francis Davis, vice-rector of Oseott College. was one of the visitors for the occasion.
After an able defence of his thesis, Fr. Synaeve gave the liturgical kiss of peace to Louvain's Rector Magnificus, Mgr. van Wayenbergh, an outstanding Belgian scholar imprisoned by the Germans during the recent war.
In the cathedral Fr. Synaeve was inscribed at the high altar and dedicated himself to his new vocation as a teacher of theology.

The Pope has appointed Mgr. Da Costa Nunes, Archbishop of Goa, Portuguese India, and Patriarch of the East Indies, as president of the permanent committee of the International Eucharistic Congress. lie succeeds Archbishop Vachon of Ottawa, who died suddenly some weeks ago.
