Green day for sixth formers
SIXTH FORM SI UDEN I S from St Francis Xavier College, Balham, and St Dominic's College, Harrow, last week took part in a London conference on the environment. They spent a day discussing the growing problems of noise, traffic and air pollution in an urban setting at the end of the 20th century.
Jet setters
THREE SIXTH FORMERS froi St Chad's School, Runcorn, are about to jet off to the far corners of the globe. The trio of 17-yearolds, Nicola Brophy, Matthew Roberts and Ben Kay will travel to Australia, Arctic Norway and Alaska respectively during the Summer as part of the British Schools Exploring Society Expedition. The school is to raise the £5,000 needed to fund the adventure.
Hi-tech boost AQUINAS COLI.FGF, STOCKPORT,
now boasts a new £300,000 Learning Resources Centre which includes CD-Rom facilities, a careers library and an audio visual collection. The centre was opened a fortnight ago by Sir William Stubbs, Chief Executive of the Further Education Funding Council.
New roots
CHILDREN FROM ST Anthony of Padua school, Liverpool, last week paid a visit to the new Liverpool Women's hospital whcrc they performed dances on the theme of the hospital, "The Pool of Life", and helped to plant some young
trees.
One to beat
THE UNDER-15 Rugby team at Mount St Mary's College, South Yorkshire, has now notched up 15 games without defeat. Their latest success was to knock out the highly fancied King's School, Macclesfield, in the second round of the Daily Mail Cup.
Adoption plans
ST CHAR! FS SIXTH Form College, London, is raising money to pay for the schooling of four orphans in Africa, two in Kenya and two in Uganda. A Grand Easter Draw will provide the core of fundraising efforts, which were inspired by the work of missionary sisters with orphaned children.
Army awards
Two PUPILS AT St Leonard'sMayfield School, Sussex, have been awarded prestigious army scholarships to continue their studies at the all-girls Catholic school before taking up their careers in the Army. Claire Brown and Rebecca Flanaghan, both 17, became the first duo to receive such scholarships from one school at the same time.
Century up
ARCHBISHOP MICHAEL. Bowen of Southwark celebrated Mass for the centenary of St Agatha's Primary School, Kingston-uponThames, last week. After the Mass at the local parish church, the Archbishop unveiled a specially commissioned painting at the school, by local artist Bob Meecham.
Tibbits' jubilee
ST PHILIP'S PREP School, Kensington, marked its diamond jubilee last week with an anniversary Mass at the Little Oratory celebrated by Cardinal Basil Hume. The school was founded in 1914 by Richard Tibbits, after whom it is still affectionately known. Current headmaster Harry Biggs-Davidson is only the third in the history of the school.
