`MISSION SCHOOLS ARE SAFE'

APLEDGE of non-interference with mission schools and a promise of continued support for them was given by Mr. Julius K. Nyerere, Chief Minister of 'I anganyika, when he addressed the Tanganyika African Teachers' Union in Dar-es-Salaam recently.
Mr. Nyerere, himself formerly a teacher at the Catholic secondary school at Pugu before he entered politics, shag ply condemned the pressures being put upon private schools, and especially denominational schools in many African countries.
He urged his audience to recognise the great work that managers and teachers of private schools had achieved and were still achieving in Africa: one should not just always point to certain mistakes of the past.
Mr, Nyerere gave an assurance that he would guarantee every support to private schools 'in Tanganyika, where they provide 66 per cent. of the country's school system.
