`ACTION' CALL TO YCW MEMBERS
ACALL to all young Catholic workers to take an active part in trade union activities and help to solve the principal problems posed by different social situations was made at the Y.C.W. Study Holiday which ended in Pau, southern France, last week.
Over 150 young workers from all major English cities and towns attended the Study Holiday, which had as its aim a review of the Christian in the world and the role of the young worker in Society.
The first discussion session, introduced by Fr. John Foster, National Chaplain to the Y.C.W., dealt with "the Christian in the World". Speakers emphasised Ihat few were taking an active part in the social life of the community, and stressed the need for trained, educated laymen to lake the faith to work and assist the teaching authority of the Church.
SURFACE
Owen Jordan introduced the second session, "England Today", where delegates stressed the need for detailed investigation into problems of housing. leisure, strikes, boredom and social apathy, as well as apprenticeship facilities and lack of preparation for marriage. "We are only scratching the surface of these problems." they stated.
Team-work was emphasised at the third session. to whioh Maurice Foley contributed, and complacency in world affairs and particularly about people in other countries was strongly criticised.
The fourth and fifth sections, dealing with social responsibility and Beyond the Section" discussed trade union membership and condemned apathy towards suffering and starving peoples. Older leaders leaving their sections was tackled and were encouraged to realise their aspostolate in social action groups. marriage training groups and extensions of regional work.
Pilgrims on Sunday's annual pilgrimage to Mount Grace Lady Chapel, on a hilltop near Osmotherlcy, in Yorkshire's North Riding, wend their way up the steep hill to the summit. Several thousand Catholics, some of them from as far away as Manchester, Leeds, York, Hull and Tees-side, took part in the pilgrimage, and attended Mass celebrated by Bishop Brunner of Middlesbrough.
The chapel, which stands immediately above the ruins of Mount Grace Priory, has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries, even though it became derelict during the Reformation. First built in 1520, and recently restored, it was visited by many Catholics during times of persecution be cause of its Isolation.
