CARDINAL Basil Hume and his auxiliary in Westminster, Bishop Vincent Nichols. lead their diocesan Young Adults Pilgrimage to Lourdes from Sunday until next Friday. As they head for France, fellow Westminster auxiliary, Bishop John Crowley, celebrates Mass at Westminster to mark the 14th anniversary of the election of Pope John Paul 11, before joining a diocesan retreat at London Colney for the rest of the week, while Bishop James O'Brien of Hertfordshire celebrates Mass for people with learning difficulties at Ealing Abbey.
Also abroad next week will be Archbishop Maurice Couve de Murville of Birmingham, who inaugurates the Newman Chair of Theology in Salamanca, Spain.
Bishop Joseph Gray of Shrewsbury has a busy week, confirming in Middlewich, Runcorn and Ellesmere Port, as does Bishop Vincent Malone, auxiliary in Liverpool, confirming at West Derby, Brinscall, Chorley, Widnes and Clayton le Woods, while Bishop David Konstant of Leeds confirms in the St Theresa's deanery, Leeds, before addressing the Derbyshire Education Authority Conference next Saturday.
On Sunday, Bishop Augustine Harris of Middlesbrough leads a commissioning service for the Order of St John Ambulance, while Bishop Cormac MurphyO'Connor of Arundel and Brighton celebrates Mass in honour of St Philip Howard at Arundel Cathedral.
On Tuesday, Bishop Daniel Mullins of Menevia joins the annual clergy dinner for the Catenian Association in Swansea, while Bishop Howard Tripp, auxiliary in Southwark, attends the launch of Lovekyn Chapel appeal, and Bishop John Brewer of Lancaster celebrates Mass for Catholic students in higher
education.
On Wednesday, Bishop Thomas McMahon of Brentwood bids farewell to the Jesuit order, departing from the parish in Loughton, Essex, while two days later blesses the sixth form buildings at Ss Bonaventure and Angela's School, Forest Gate.
On Thursday, Bishop Crispian Hollis of Portsmouth attends the De Brebant Lecture at LSU College, Southampton, while Bishop Leo McCartie of Northampton celebrates the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Jesus and Mary at Thornton, near Milton Keynes.
On Friday, Bishop Christopher Budd of Plymouth attends his diocesan headteachers' conference, while Bishop Alan Clark of East Anglia blesses a new hall at the parish in Newmarket and Bishop Patrick Kelly of Salford attends a meeting of the International Catholic Deaf Foundation over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Bishop Mervyn Alexander of Clifton presents prizes at the Catholic Skittles Annual Presentation Dance in Bristol on Friday.

AN all-day conference on tackling unemployment is being held in Jarrow on October 24. Arranged by Churches Together in Jarrow, the event will take place from 10am to 4pm at St Peter's Church Hall, York Avenue.
Obituaries
CANON Thomas Candlish of the Lancaster diocese has died. He was 88
Born in Lytham, Lanes, in July 1904, he was baptised at St Peter's church in the town and educated at the local school. He undertook his seminary studies at Upholland and was ordained in May 1931.
He served as curate at English Martyrs, Preston, St John Vianney's, Blackpool, and at Lancaster Cathedral, before becoming an army chaplain during the War. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1945 for outstanding service.
He then became parish priest of St Thomas More's, Lancaster, and in 1954, RAF chaplain at Kirkham. Between 1956 and 60 he was parish priest at Kendal, and then established at parish of the Good Shepherd in Morecambe, Lanes, serving until retirement in 1980. He continued to live in the parish until last autumn when he moved to Nazareth House. His funeral was at Lancaster Cathedral.
HEXHAM and Newcastle priest Fr Thomas Dollard died suddenly at the end of September. He was 65. Fr Dollard was ordained priest by Bishop Collier in Kilkenny, Ireland in June 1952, and first served as an assistant priest at St Mary's, Stockton-onTees until 1965, when he moved to Chopwell.
In 1971, he became priest in charge at St Anne's, Darlington, for 12 years, before becoming parish priest at Ss Peter and Paul's, Tyne Dock. In June 1991, he moved to St Mary's, South Moor. His funeral was held at St Mary's and he was buried in Crosspatrick, Co Kilkenny, Ireland,
WEST Cork-born Fr Patrick Collins has died at Ince Blundell Home, Liverpool. He joined the sacred Heart Fathers before the war, and following studies in Belgium and southern England, was ordained at the end of hostilities.
He was first based in Malpas, Cheshire, before spending 25 years working in the Flemishspeaking parts of.Belgium. He returned to England to work in Flitwick, Bedfordshire, before retiring to Liverpool four years ago.
Even through retirement, he stayed active, ministering to the Little Sisters of the Poor and at Stella Mans, Bootle.
