ALL EUROPE MEM' IN LONDON
From all Europe, France, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Holland and Britain Christian Democrat delegates to the recent World Youth Conference and representatives of the Christian Democrat Parties assembled in London last week under the auspices of the People and Freedom Group. The unity of principles underlying the various national Christian Democratic Parties was the most striking feature of the meeting: the difficulty which faced the recent conference by reason of the different interpretations of democracy coming from the East and West of Europe was also commented upon.
Mr. Conrad Bonacina, welcom.mg the gtiests as Chairman of People and Freedom, stressed the SIg11111calltX J. this gathering oi young men of many nations, united by a common ideal; he could assure them that nowhere would they finsI fuller sympathy and understanding riot only for their aims but also for their difficulties, in their contacts with those who had other conceptions of democracy, and It was, he said, of great encouragement to people who had held aloft the flag of Christian democracy in difficult years, to know that a younger generation Was ready to carry on the work, with enthusimin and vision.
We, he said, know that the Iwo words " Christian" and " Dernocracy" cannot be separated, for Christianity alone brings that recognition of the dignity of the human person, of liberty, of spiritual values, without which democracy withers.

Christian democracy was the only true democracy, and in toe solidarity of men who in their work are working for the Kingdom of Cod, lay the only hope for peace.
Signor Manila Mazzeotti spoke on behalf of the Italian delegation. This meeting, he said, had been most fruitMI in allowing Christian democrats of the different countries to get together and exchange views; it was fitting that this should be in England, the country that in 1940 had 'stood alone in combat
for the principles they had at heart.•Of true democracy it could be said, as
of the human soul, that it was " naturally Christian." HOLLAND
Dr. Cats, vice-chairman of the Netherhands Catholic Youth Movement, said that the political life oh Holland as a 1whole was permeated by a Christian and democratic spirit, and indeed a new rovement had been founded to
all parties' the Christian inspiration of After the speeches of the youth delegates, Mr. Sopicki, of the Polish Government its London, Dr. Meyer and pr. Menmer added a few words on the position of Christian democracy in their
respect ivo countr lea. No Christian `deinocratic delegates, said Mr. Sopicki, had been able Co come from Poland, but from all his information, there was in Poland that same hunger for social justice, political liberty and spiritual values that inspired Christian Democrats the world over. and when Poland was free, he was certain that a strong Christian Democratic movement would
be found at its post. • Dr. Meyer spoke of the common heritage of Western civilisation, and pleaded for greater moral support of the Christian Democrats of Germany, Dr. Menczer stressed that the recent Hungarian elections, where the Smallholders' or Agrarian Party had won 60 eer cent. of the votes, meant a triumph for Christian Democratic tendencies.
WORLD YOUTH CONFERENCE Conversation with the delegates revealed that the work of the World Youth Conference, representing sixty nations, has been rendered difficult through the divergent conceptions of democracy to which more than one speaker had alluded. Because the leading spirits in organising the Conference were Communists, and them VALS an attempt to present it as one of the in ternational fronts " that enter into Communist policy, the Catholic authorities in some countries (Britain, U.S.A., Belgium) had withheld the official participation of Carbolic organisations. In others (e.g., France., Italy), Catholic Action bodies were represented by observers. The Christian Democrats, as members of independent political organisations, in view of the fact that the proclaimed platform of the Conference was one that they could endorse, seek to play a part, in shaping a movement that in bringing together young people of all nations has that at least as positive achievement, judging all decisions by the criterion of their own principles, fighting for these as occasion arises.
