H U NDRED and sixty seven Catholic priests and nuns from 1 I countries have been killed in the Congo since the country gained independence in July. 1960.
Most of them were murdered during the past 18 months by the Congolese rebels, says a statement released by Catholic missionary authorities in Leopoldville. Twenty-seven of the victims were murdered before the outbreak of the Simba revolt in Kwilu Province and the Eastern Congo iii January, 1964. 1 he worst massacre before this time was the slaughter of 20 Belgian priests at Konkolo, North Katanga. on New Years Day. 1962.
Many other priests who escaped alive were maltreated by the rebels or by mutinous soldiers. Eighty priests and 20 of the nuns who died were Belgians. and 27 of the priests were Dutch. There are no official figures on the total number of white people but it is killed during this time, estimated at more than 300.
