Distinguished diplomat dies
QIR GEORGE OGILVIE-FORBES, K.C.M.G., the distinguished "diplomat, died in an Aberdeen hospital on Saturday, aged 62. He was taken ill while representing Scotland at the International Catholic Film Office Conference in Cologne.
He was British Chargé d'Affaires to the Holy See from 1930 to 1932.
After three years in Baghdad, he served as Charge d'Affaires in Madrid and Valencia during the Spanish Civil War and won the highest praise from British and Spaniards alike for the way in which he safeguarded Britain's interests in Spain.
He was knighted in 1937.
During the last two years of agony before the war, he acted as Counsellor and Charge d'Affaires in the Berlin Embassy. where he played his part in the final desperate efforts to avert the world war,
War service
A short spell in Oslo was followed by service as British Minister in Cuba, and his final appointment, which he held for five years. took him to Venezuela in 1945 as Ambassador, Sir George was educated at Beaumont College. Bonn University and New College, Oxford.
He was wounded and twice mentioned in despatches during the first World War when he served at Gallipoli, Egypt and Mesopotamia.
Joining the Diplomatic Service in 1919, he first served in Scandinavia and at the Foreign Office in London, became First Secretary to the Embassy at Belgrade and in 1927 was sent to Mexico City, where he saw the persecution of the Catholics in the days when Fr. Miguel Pro, S.J., was shot.
Sir years ago Sir George retired to his Boyndlie estate and became a Deputy Lieutenant for Aberdeen. During the remaining years of his life he served on committees and councils of the Catholic Union of Great Britain, the Saltire Society and the Scottish Council for Industry and Development.
