Priest as missions promoter

The diocese of Salford is the first in the country to appoint a priest to work full-time as diocesan director for the overseas mission of the Church.
He is Fr. Anthony Grimshaw, 36, who has recently returned from Kenya where he spent six years as a volunteer missionary. He will work from an office at Pendleton, Salford.
Fr. Grimshaw said this week: "I am delighted to accept this responsibility. My first job is to inform Catholics in our diocese about the Church's work overseas and our share in it. There is a lot of goodwill but not enough clear information and knowledge.
"Priests and layfolk respond generously to appeals from missionary orders, to collections for the Association for the Propagation of the Faith and to the Family Fast Day collections organised by the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development. They are moved by pictures and reports of the suffering and destitution of people in the Third World.
'CONFUSED'
"But they are confused by the variety of appeals and collections. They have only a vague idea of where the money goes and what it does. They respond when they're asked, but for most of the time they regard the overseas mission of the Church as something extra.
"I hope that my appointment will be the first of others in every diocese of England and Wales. The missionary orders are so enthusiastic about this work that they are prepared to help any diocese by releasing one of their own priests to work as a replacement for the full-time director."
Bishop Holland of Salford appointed Fr. Grimshaw to his new post as a result of approaches made to the Bishops of England and Wales by the national bodies concerned with the overseas mission of the Church. At national level these are the Commission for Missionary Activity, the National Missionary Council, the Justice and Peace Commission, the mission-aid societies and the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development.
Silver Jubilee Mass
Three archbishops will assist Archbishop Murphy of Cardiff at Mass in thanksgiving for his 25 years as a bishop.
The archbishops are: Archbishop Beck of Liverpool, Archbishop Dwyer of Birmingham and Archbishop Cowcleroy of Southwark.
Cardinal Heenan will preach at the Mass in St. David's Cathedral, Cardiff, on February 27.
Fifteen bishops will attend the Mass as well as all diocesan clergy and representatives of every religious and lay organisation in the archdiocese.
