YORKSHIRE HAILS DR. HEENAN

Leeds singularly, fortunate' ORKSHIRE is preparing a hearty welcome for its new Londonborn Bishop, 45 yearold Mgr. John Carmel Heenan, D.D., Ph.D., Superior of the Catholic Missionary Society, whose appointment as Bishop of Leeds war announced on Saturday by the Apostolic Delegation in London.
The people already know him well as a broadcaster, journalist, and preacher—and they know, too, that he studied for the priesthood at the English College in Rome under that great Yorkshireman, Cardinal Hinsley, whose biography he has written.
Moreover, Yorkshiremen are well acquainted with him per sonally through his visits to and .
speeches in Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford.
The diocese had waited nearly a year for its new Bishop: Mgr. Heenan's predecessor, Bishop Poskitt,
died on last February 19. Immediately the news reached the city it
• was chalked up on dozens of placard boards.
Mgr William Ilawkswell. who has been administering the diocese as Vicar Capitular. said: " Dr. Heenan is a grand man, most generous, active and a good preacher."
Mgr. John Dims, administrator of Leeds Cathedral and Vicar General to Bishop Poskitt, recalled that the Bishop-elect and he were fellowstudents in Rome for five years, remarked on his wide interests and activity in many fields, and said that his interest in sport would appeal to Yorkshiremen.
Mgr. Dinn added: His vital personality, his gift for making friends. his ability. his amusing conversation. his sympathy and interest in people have brought him many friendships. not only with Catholics but with others as well.

"The diocese of Leeds is singularly fortunate in having such a talented. amiable. active and experienced priest for its new Bishop." Yorkshire newspapers pay tribute to Mgr. Heenen's'notable broadcasts during the war, his outstanding opposition to Communism, his courage in the air raids on London and his ability as a writer. Mgr. Heenan was giving a Lenten mission at Arnold. Nottingham, when his appointment was announced, and Bishop Ellis was among the first to congratulate him.
Born at Ilford, Essex—then part of the Westminster diocese but now in the Brentwood diocese—Dr. Heenan was educated for the priesthood at Ushaw College, Durham, and at the English College, Rome, when Cardinal Hinsley and the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Godfrey. were the Rectors.
Cardinal Griffin and Mgr. Masterson. Archbishop of Birmingham, were among his fellow-students.
