LEADING' anti-apartheid campaigners Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Dr Allan Boesak have welcomed the formation of a major British church organisation to boost their cause.
Their support was given to Dr Simon Barrington Ward, the Anglican Bishop of Coventry and chair of the recently-formed Southern African Coalition, who has just returned from a three-day visit to South Africa. The coalition brought together more than 60 organisations, including mans Catholic church groups, to pressurise the British government to take steps towards ending apartheid.
He said he had been most impressed by the courage and cheerfulness of the people of South Africa. "They face hatred and brutality from the police and they desperately need a breathing space from the everpresent fear of violence, detention or worse. The South African government must end this waste and suffering immediately."
