Bishop Cowderoy's Sources
IN regard to the rather foolish article in the "Sunday Pictorial" on Bishop Cowderoy, a reader (Mr. Hanlon of Liverpool)
has written to point out that one of the Bishop's "embarrassing" anti-Protestant views came from Protestant, not Catholic, sources.
The Bishop is quoted as saying that Queen Elizabeth I was "one in' the most infamous and miserable women in history. not excepting Jezebel". Who first said that? William Cobbett wrote: "But all mankind must agree that this was the worst woman (Elizabeth 1) that ever existed in England, or in the whole world, Jezebel herself not excepted". What fascinates one about these Sunday paper Catholic articles and features is their incompetence. The recent one on doubtful relic involved the veteran E I. Watkin as challenging this same bishop. Actually, no such challenge had been made and the source of the reference to him came from quite a mild letter in the "Catholic Times". I suppose the writers avoid consulting any informed Catholic sources because they suspect. (rightly) that the sting of the articles will have to be extracted.
More Latin?
THE use of more, rather than less, Latin in the work of the Church sounds unusual these days —not lewd coming from the wise Pere Rouquette, Si.. of Etudes in Paris. But one imagines that few of the " reformist" mentality will object in this instance. On the occasion of the recent centenary of the Osserratore Romano, Pere Rouquette notes that its sub
title, Political-Religious Daily". was inevitable in the past when the " Roman question " was all-important. Today it could be misleading in a paper that is inevitably largely interested in Italian affairs. His suggestion is that the Huly See should have two papers. the first deriving, as it were, from the Pope's position as Primate of Italy—in other words for Italian questions mainly. The second would be an official and,or semi
official journal for the whole world printed in Latin and perhaps :Also in English and Spanish. the two most used languages in Catholicity today. I must say that T did not realise that these were the two commonest Catholic languages.
