A theatre 'special' for Good Friday

FOR the first time in more than two centuries, the Lord Chamberlain has given permission for a West End theatre to put on a play on Good Friday. The play is Henri Gheon's "The Way of the Cross", and the special permission has been given because of "the exceptional devotional character of the work".
The normal rule, following the Licencing Act of 1737, is that no theatre licence can be given for entertainment on Good Friday.
Theatre Group Productions, which will present the play, is a professional organisation, but profits arc ploughed back to further its main purpose of presenting Christian drama in parishes throughout the country.
The Good Friday performances of thc play will be at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the New Theatre, St. Martin's Lane (seating capacity 1,100), and tickets, from 4s. to 12s. 6d., are now obtainable at 4he theatre box office.
