Importance of the Nolan report
From the Acting Director of the Catholic Media Office Sir, Anthony Redmond (letter, June 8) refers to the "hasty response" of the bishops to Lord Nolan's first independent report. In the wake of tragic past cases, the bishops are certainly committed to ensuring that the Church becomes the safest of places for children, and indeed becomes exemplary in this area.
This is why, after a two-week period of reflection and then discussions among themselves and with the Nolan committee, the bishops unanimously resolved to implement the report's recommendations. There is undoubtedly still work to be done. One of the intentions of the publication of a first report was to elicit further responses.
The Nolan Review continues its work and a final report is expected later this year. Before then, the Review will have had further meet ings with groups of victims/survivors of abuse and also with groups of those falsely accused. The bishops have also established an implementation team which is now working on the practicalities and the establishment of a consistent and effective Church approach and a national child protection unit.
The Nolan Review's excellent work, based as it is on wide expertise and best practice, will help to bring about that "culture of vigilance" which will enable the Church to set up and maintain the highest standards of child protection. This can only be in the best interests both of children and of justice.
Yours faithfully TOM HORWOOD Catholic Media Office
