Old Testament Stories. By Dom Hubert van Zeller, O.S.B. (Burns Oates. 6s. 6d.) T HIS is Fr. van Zeller's well-known book From Creation to Christ mas, rechristened. Its breezy colloquial summaries and colourful descriptive bits do certainly bring the Old Testament characters to life. Also he frequently makes full imaginative connection between the O.T. episodes and Our Lord. On the debit side, perhaps he does not say enough to fortify the reader against the moral difficulties which arise out of the Old Testament (and arise more insistently when the stories are told realistically), nor are liturgical associations brought out at all. In the Scripture Text Book Series this book is assigned to the twelve-year-olds, but this seems to the present reviewer rather arbitrary and premature. For teachers it is a grand book. M. I.
