Theologian cautioned THE VATICAN Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has

issued a 16-point "notification" on the controversial Austrian theologian Reinhard Messner, which he is reported to have accepted and signed.
In the statement, the CDF emphasised that only the tradi tion of the Church guaranteed the correct interpretation of Scripture and that Church teaching should be used to interpret the Bible, not the other way round.
The CDF also underlined that "according to the faith of the Church, Christ instituted the seven sacraments".
The notification was signed by Cardinal Ratzinger and Archbishop Bertone, prefect and secretary, respectively, of the CDF and was approved by Pope John Paul II.
