for Bishop's

A SENIOR JEsurr theologian has called for the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize to be awarded to the Bishop of San Cristobal in Chiapas for defence of the Indians of Mexico against exploitation and poverty.
Fr Jesus Garcia, sociologist and former member of the Vatican's Commission for Justice and Peace, said in a newspaper interview that criticism of Bishop Samuel Ruiz, who has been accused by the authorities of encouraging Marxism, was an example of "how once a person tries to defend the poor, they are immediately attacked by those who hold power and wealth".
Bishop Ruiz was a mediator between the government and Mexican rebels after the January uprising in Chiapas.
