OBITUARY CANON C. J. McKENNA
Canon Christopher John McKenna, chairman of the Society of Our Lady of Lourdes, who died suddenly on Friday, was one of the first students from Westminster to be sent to the new central seminary at Owen in 1895 and was ordained priest in 1904 by Cardinal Vaughan at the first ordination in Westminster Cathedral.
For 48 years he was attached to the Cathedral, and he took over as chapelof-ease to the Cathedral the little Church of Si. Ames in Abbey Orchard Street, which was formerly a Catholic Apostolic Church. Until a few years ago Canon McKenna was chaplain of the Westminster Blessed Sacrament Guild and for many years was director of the national pilgrimage to Lourdes, having become chairman of the Society of Our Lady of Lourdes on the death of Mgr. Carton de Wiart.
He founded and was chaplain of the London Catholic Transport Guild, an idea which has since been taken up by other towns in the country. Until the outbreak of the last war his little church, the nearest Catticilic church to the House of Commons, was well known for its monthly all-night Adoration. and for many sears numbers of business people in Westminster have attended his popular lunch-hour services.
Cardinal Griffin presided at the Solemn. Requiem Mass offered in the Cathedral on Tuesday. by Archbishop Myers, who was assisted by Canon McKenna's, two nephews, Fr. John F. McKenna, a Southwark priest. and Fr. Bernard McKenna, C.F. Bishop Craven and a very large number of priests were present in the sanctuary.
HON. E. FITZHERBERT Capt. the Hon. Evelyn Thomas Fitzherbere Grenadier Guards, who, it was announced on Tuesday, has been drowned in a boating accident in the Great Bitter Lake, was the younger son of the late Capt. the Hon. Thomas Charles and Mrs. Fitzherbert and a brother of Lord Stafford. He was 23.
Capt. Fitzherbert was educated at Ampleforth, and was head boy of St. Cuthbert's there.
He served with the Grenadier Guards in Malaya.
