BELGIAN PRIMATE ON LEOPOLD'S SURRENDER

In all the churches in Brussels a Pastoral Letter by the Primate of Belgium, Cardinal Van Roey, supporting the surrender made by King Leopold, has been read, according to the Vatican Radio. In this letter the Cardinal has written: "For our part, knowing ourselves to be in agreement with the almost unanimous opinion of the Belgian people, we maintain for our Xing respect, fidelity and confidence." Vatican Radio comments that the letter of the Cardinal has created an immense impression in Belgium and has proved an opportune guide for the troubled consciences of the Belgian people.
A German broadcast on the Cardinal's letter (which is not referred to as a Pastoral) attributes such statements to the Cardinal as, that the position of the Belgian Army on May 28 was hopeless, that no aid was received from the Allies, that the decision of Xing Leopold was taken in collaboration with his General Staff.
