MAY I suggest that serious subjects should be treated seriously:

with humour by all means, but not with flippancy. I refer to John Ryan's cartoon of Archbishop Lefebvre, with reference to his so-called "schism". Has Mr Ryan not heard of A thanasius contra mundum? (For a time Athanasius was the one bishop who refused to compromise with the Arian heresy.) Lefebvre's gravamina concerning certain of the decrees of the second Vatican Council would seem to be well based. Certainly they have never been rebutted; an d Cardinal Ratzinger himself has conceded that the Council's statement on religious libery appears to contradict the previous teaching of the Church on this matter.
Perhaps cartoonists should be wary of trespassing in the theological field.

RE your editorial of July 7. In common with the majority of loyal Catholics I have no intention whatsoever of following Archbishop Lefebvre into schism, whilst sympathising with some of his views.
At the same time, a large number of us loyal Catholics would never agree with your editorial that the Holy Spirit is behind the movements of the post Vatican II Church. They seem to be led, largely, by a comparitively small group of priests, religious and laity who are imposing their will on the Church.
