By HENRI ROLLET " From the point of view of Christianity the present state of affairs in France is not wholly satisfactory: from the social point of view it is even less so."
This is one of the most striking statements made by Cardinal Suhard, Archbishop of Paris, in a special interview he accorded me as representative of THE CA1HOLIC HERALD.
Speaking in Notre Dame of the celebrations of his jubilee the Cardinal had spoken of being "haunted" by them. I asked him what exactly he meant by this.
" I am," he said, " indeed haunted by the necessity of making the Church ever more ' present ' to the world at large. Her existence must be more effective and more efficient not only for the proletariat but for all classes.
" It is on this that I shall be judged. I am always asking myself the question, have we adopted the means. all the means to help the Church reach those who are ignorant of her. who misunderstand her, and to touch their minds, hearts and souls."
PRIESTS' MISSION
" What are some of the means which your Eminence has been responsible for ?"
"One which has been added to present methods. and notably to specialised Catholic Action, is the priests' mission. The Paris Mission gathers together priests who have specialised in the study of the workers' environment. it aims at making the Church more attractive to these classes and giving her back her true note.
" The priest lives as a priest in the midst of the workers and in that particular place disarms their (Continued on page 5.)
