"Irish Freedom" and " Voice of Spain"
THEY REPRESENT NEITHER IRELAND NOR SPAIN
—SPECIAL INTERVIEWS WITH EDITORS
Among the less well-known, but nevertheless freely circulating, periodicals in this country are Irish Freedom and the Voice of Spain.
Both periodicals have a special importance for Catholics and strive to appeal to them, owing to special interest of Catholics in Ireland and Spain. Both claim a circulation of 8,000.
The Catholic Herald contends that the Voice of Spain is not the voice of Spain and that Irish Freedom has nothing to do with Irish freedom •
The Voice of Spain is edited by Mr. Charles Duff, whom a prominent Spaniard in London describes as " a meddlesome Englishman who makes it his business continually to interfere with the internal affairs of Spain." It is denied that the paper is supported by Dr. Negrin, ex-Republican Prime Minister of Spain, but not that " it is being partly helped by friends among refugees."
Irish Freedom is the organ of the Connolly Clubs, described as "an association of Irish Workers in England," which supported the recent People's Convention in London. It supports a " People's Peace" and its programme is indistinguishable from that of British Communists and near-Communists.
The Catholic Herald has begun its campaign to enlighten the public as to the real nature of these periodicals by interviewing the Voice of Spain and the Chairman of the Connolly Clubs. Neither would give such an interview without demanding,an undertaking that the interviews should be passed by themselves and limited to what they had passed. We print therefore these two interviews, which are authoritative, and invite comments on them from our readers, especially with those having a special interest in Ireland and Spain.
