Evictions by Rhodesia 'a violation'

THE Justice for Rhodesia Campaign, one of the sponsors of which is Bishop Butler, Auxiliary of Westminster, told the Foreign Secretary, Sir Alec DouglasHome, last week that the Rhodesian Government's eviction of 5,000 Africans this month violated the terms of the settlement.
Their statement said : "These evictions underline the pointlessness of any dealings with the present regime in Rhodesia. We call on you to commit the United Kingdom to a policy of intensified sanctions to bring down the regime." The Foreign Office has made what has been described as "a technically impeccable defence" of the Smith regime's action.
The White Paper published on Sir Alec's return from Rhodesia in November said the Rhodesian Government "have given an assurance that they will not take steps to evict African tenants" from two specified areas or "from other areas in which they are living until such time as the Pearce Commission has reported." Whitehall interprets "other areas" as those Rhodesia has designated for European occupation. The evictions are from an African township. Mr. Alex Callinicos, a Rhodesian member of the Campaign, said he thought the evictions significant with the Pearce Report expected within a week.
