W. I Grand-Daughter of " Father of American Philosophy" Gains Laetare Medal
From Our Own Correspondent NEW YORK.
The Laetare Medal, awarded annually on Laetare Sunday by Notre Dame University to an outstanding Catholic lay person, has gone this year to Miss Josephine Brownson, president of the Catholic Instruction League of Detroit.
The award is made in recognition of Miss Brownson's work in organising lay catechists for the instruction of public school children.
Miss Brownson is the eleventh woman to receive the medal. She is the granddaughter of Orestes A. Brown.son, known as the father of American philosophy.
Orestes Brownson, prominent in one of the first groups of American intellectuals of the nineteenth century, entered the Church after having tried several of the Protestan creeds extant in his time. He is notable also as one of the first Catholic laymen in America to interest himself in the cause of the working man.
