P.M. AND ' SHORT LIST'

Catholic Herald Reporter THE Sunday Express, in its issue of last Sunday, referred again to its report on September 6 that the Prime Minister had been given a short list of names from which the new Archbishop of Westminster was to be chosen.
The statement said :
"In last week's Sunday Express, it was reported that the Prime Minister had been given a short list of names from which the new Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster was to be chosen and comments were attributed to Bishop George Craven and to an official of the Apostolic Delegation in London.
From Archbishop's House, Westminster, Monsignor Derek Worlock yesterday made the following statement:
'ft is understood that no such list was given to the Prime Minister. Further, that Bishop George Craven did not make any comment whatsoever. However, it is now evident that the reporter concerned did speak on the telephone for some time to one of the bishop's assistants and due to a misunderstanding thought he was speaking to the Bishop himself. The Apostolic Delegation in Lon
don also wishes to be associated with the denial of this report.'
The Sunday Express regrets any misunderstanding over this matter.
Not Circulated We understand from the Press Association that the earlier statement by Mgr. Worlock, published in the CATHOLIC HERALD last week, was not, as we stated, circulated to the Fleet Street papers by the Press Association.
In a statement to the CATHOLIC HERALD. Mr. Terence Smith, who wrote the original Sunday Express report, said it had now been confirmed that he had attempted to verify the truth of his report by telephoning to Bishop Craven's assistant and to the Apostolic Delegation.
Because of the misunderstanding involved, we would like to state that we did not suggest. nor intend to suggest, that Mr. Smith or the Sunday Express had acted in bad faith.
