ejuvenation for Chapel shrine

WHAT A delightful publication is the Walsingham Newsterrer, published by the Director Father Clive Birch SM.
I have just been reading the golden jubilee edition of the Restoration of the Shrine in the Slipper Chapel, spanning the years of the National Shrine from 1934 to 1984.
The Slipper Chapel has been spruced up for the Golden Jubilee. The roof has now been repaired and the Sacristy and Holy Ghost chapel roof and windows have been repaired at a total cost of £35,000.
Pilgrims have given generously, but of course, says Father Birch. donations are still very welcome for many other projects in hand. It is not a large sum for the English Nazareth which stretches back in history until 1061. and to which pilgrims came from all over Europe, until Henry VIII destroyed it in 1538.
Fr Birch points out in this newsletter that on 19th August. 1934, the Slipper Chapel was restored to use and established as the Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady.
It was something of a miracle. RFTFir fr311,' centuries of darkness,
that the lovely lanes of Walsingham should once more be lit by the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, and the fields resound to the sound of pilgrim voices chanting the praise of Jesus 'in the Blessed Sacrament.
Some of the original pilgrims of 50 years ago are still with us. notably Bishop Wheeler. and Bruno Scott James, the then priest in charge of the shrine.
The National Pilgrimage this Golden Jubilee Year will be led by Cardinal Hume.
For further information on this lovely National Shrine of Our Lady write to Very Rev Clive Birch. Director. The Pilgrim Bureau. High Street. Walsingham, Norfolk NR22 6BZ or telephone Walsingham (032872-567).
Offers of covenants and donations can be of tremendous help in furthering devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham, which is so much a part of the Conversion of England. a source of prayer for vocations to the priesthood. and prayer for the Isian.ctification of Catholic family fe
