Cheshire joins the Order of Merit

GROUP CAPTAIN Leonard Cheshire VC (above) is among the three new Members of the Order of Merit, limited to 24 chosen as the personal gift of the Queen.
Group Captain Cheshire, who commanded the Dambuster Squadron and has since built up the network of Cheshire Homes, joins Lord Olivier and Nobel Prize winner Sir Peter Medawar as the new OMs. Other members include Henry Moore the sculptor and Harold Macmillan.
Group Captain Cheshire is married to Baroness Ryder, who started the Sue Ryder foundation for the disabled.
