Sunday, November 4. Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost. St. josaphat.
The work chiefly associated with the Polish St. Tosaphat (1580-.1623). Archbishnp tzf Polutsk, was that of striving to bring to Catholic unity the Orthodox Christians of Poland and Lithuania. The Saint met a violent death at the Lamle of schismatics at Vitebsk, in Russia. His relics are at Polotsk.
Monday, November 15. St. Albert. St. Malo.
St. Albert the Great stands out in Church history as one of the glories of the thirteenth century. His intellectual gifts were such that, he is called the "Universal Doctor." He 'WAS' a man proficient in every breech of learning unitive*, ia his clay. St. Mato is in popular knowledge inerell: by the place-name. Ile wus a sixth-century Welshman whu becalme the favourite disciple of St. Brendan.
BB. Richard Whiting, John Thorne, and Roger James, 0.S.B., martyred at Glastonbury; • BB. Hugh Faringdon, O.S.B., John Eynon, and John Rugg, martyred at Reading. All these martyrdoms were in x539.
Tuesday, November 16. St. Gertrude, St. Edmund.
St. Gertrude the Great was a Benedietine nun of the thirteenth century. She was the first great exponent of di votion to the Sacred Heart. St. Gertrude is patron saint of the West Indies. The first of two St. Edmunds who come into this week's calendar is St. Edmund Rich, Archbishop of Canterbury. This English saint is venerated in particular in France, at Pontiguy, where most of his relies are preserved.
Wednesday, November 17. St. Gregory Thaumaturgus. St Hugh. St. Hilda.
A convert in youth, in the third century, St. Gregory earned the title of " the wonder-worker " by extraordinary missionary snece,ss. When he became Bishop of Neocaesarea the see had in its territory only seventeen Christians; when he died there were only that number of pagans. St. Hilda is the great abbess honoured in connection with Whitby. St. Hugh is St. Hugh of Lincoln, Bishop of that see in the twelfth century.. By birth he was a Burgundian. To him was due the rebuilding of Lincoln Cathedral, which had been ruined by an earthquake.
Thursday, November 18. Dedication of the basilicas of SS. Peter and Paul.
Friday, November 19. St. Elizabeth of Hungary. St. Pontian.
Devotion to the poor, the sick and the. aged, was the outstanding feature of the work of the young widowed Hungarian princess, St. Elizabeth, from the time when she lost her husband, in 1927, until her death tem' years later at the age of twentyfour. St, Pontian was a Pope and martyr of the third century.
Saturday, November 20. St. Felix of Valois. St. Edmund, King and Martyr.
St, Felix of Valois was co-founder, with St. John of Matha, of the Trinitarian order. In St. Edmund, Ring and Martyr, the Church commemorates to-day the pious
King of East Anglia who was tortured to death, in A by the Danes.
