Opinion for urban poor

"BEING there" for the thousands of inner city inhabitants facing spiralling debt and declining social services is a vital part of the Church's ministry, said Archbishop Derek Worlock of Liverpool this week.
In the 1989 Debrabant Lecture staged on Wednesday at La Sainte Union College, Southampton, Archbishop Worlock said that a priest's ministry is not solely tied up with "churchy" things, but involves being submerged in the everyday financial problems raced by the average inner city family.
Dr David Sheppard, Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, who was delivering the lecture jointly with Archbishop Worlock, said that Christians have a duty to make the better off aware of the plight of the poor: "Those of us who know the reality of poverty in Britain today, owe it to the rich and comfortable — our brothers and sisters — to tell them about the actual experiences of people, who belong to the same body, the same marching regiment, the same nation".
