The removal of Quest

From Mr Bernard Crowe Sir, You report (March 5) that the Cardinal has ordered that Quest be removed from the National Catholic Directory because of its rejection at the AGM last July of his proposed amendments to Quest's Constitution and because of its approval of same sex relationships.
The AGM neither approved nor disapproved.
You report that the Constitution is ambiguous and that the Cardinal wished to rectify this.
I maintain that there is no ambiguity. It obviously did not go as far as the Cardinal wished: hence his proposal for an amendment. The Constitution as it now stands is what has helped Quest, which after all is a lay organisation, over the years to have a working relationship with the Church by not spelling matters out.
Seeking to change this has damaged both Quest and the Church.
Yours faithfully, BERNARD CROWE Bradford.
From Mr Simon Fielding Sir, Although I disagree with the stance taken by Quest, the support group for Catholic homosexuals, it does seem somewhat unfair that they alone have been excluded from the Catholic Directory when in the past, other organisations which openly dissent from Catholic teaching on various issues have been allowed in. It will be interesting to note, when the Directory is eventually on sale, if these other groups have also been removed. If they have not, then the Bishops' Conference has left itself wide open to charges of so-called "homophobia".
In fairness to Quest, there should not be one rule for dissent in matters of homosexuality and another rule for other forms of dissent. All dissent from Catholic moral and doctrinal teaching is wrong, therefore all dissenting organisations should be removed from the Directory. It might be more prudent in future to check the constitution and agenda of any organisation asking to be included.
Yours faithfully, SIMON FIELDING, Kew, Surrey.
