IN BRIEF Bishop Casey welcomes CWL to cathedral

Before concelebrating the Holy Year Mass of Reconciliation in the new Brentwood Cathedral last Sunday, Bishop Casey welcomed about 400 members of the Brentwood branch of the Catholic Women's League to the cathedral for the first time. After the Mass. Mrs M. SmIth. the CWL branch president, presented Bishop'Casey with a cheque for £364 for the Ecclesiastical Education Fund.
Old Catholic Church move
The Old Roman Catholic Church, which separated from the Catholic Church in the 17th century, has moved its headquarters in London from Highbury to 23 Drayton Park; N5. The blessing of the new chapel last Saturday marked the beginning 'of ten days of ecumenical prayer and praise.
Papal .medal for headmistress
Sister Alexis's (Sisters of Charity of St Paul) headmistress of St Ignatius Primary School, Sunhury-on-Thames, who retires at the end of the summer term after 33 years at the school, has been awarded the Pro Erelesia at Pontifice Medal by Pope Paul. The presentation was made last week by Bishop Mahon. Auxiliary of Westminster. at St Mary's College. Strawberry -Hill. Middlesex.
Bishop to, address Salford nuns
Bishop Holland of Salford will address several hundred nuns and brothers from all over the diocese in St John's Cathedral on July 21 for the first gathering of its kind in the diocese for many years. There are 754 nuns and 89 brothers in the diocese, living in more than 70 religious houses. Bishop Holland this week completes a programme of visits to these houses which he began some 18 months ago.
Readers at Stage Guild Mass
Moira Lister and Richard O'Callaghan will be two of the Readers for the Catholic Stage Guild Annual Mass which will be celebrated on Sunday at the "Actors' Church," Corpus Christi, in Maiden Lane, London, WC2, The celebrant will be Fr Francis Edwards, Si. There will be a reception afterwards at Henekey's, 354 Strand. All stage people are welcome.
Cardigan parishioner ordained
A parishioner ot' Our Lady of' the Taper, Cardigan, was ordained there on Sunday by Bishop Langdon Fox of Menevia. lie is Fr John Dermody, 25.
Opening of Manchester hostel for boys
Bishop Holland of Salford will bless and officially open a Manchester hostel for adolescent boys on Tuesday which is a joint venture by the Salford Diocesan Rescue Society and the Society of St Vincent de Paul. The hostel, known as "The Beeches," in Burnage Lane, takes nine boys. Local SYP members are involved in running it with the house parents, Mr Peter and Mrs Rose O'Brien. O'Brien.
Presentation for parish work
At the opening of the new parish hall of St Nicholas Owen, Thornton-le-Fylde, Blackpool, Bishop Foley of Lancaster presented Papal Blessings to Mrs Mary Tittle and Mr George Murray in recognition of their contribution to the work of the parish. Mr Murray, a former Master of the Manchester branch of the Catholic Evidence Guild, was runner-up in the recent Yorkshire Television religious quiz programme.
North Wales community service camp
A number of young people aged between 17 and 25 will spend the week beginning July 20 at the Franciscan Monastery at Pantasaph, North Wales, taking part in a project organised by The Grail. It will combine leisure-time activities with community service. The tasks, both practical and social, will depend on the needs of the local community. A similar project for girls only will be based at St Mary's Convent, Llandudno, for the week beginning August 24.
Wearmouth 1300 Festival on TV
At the conclusion of a year of celebrations for the Wearrnouth 1300 Festival, Tyne Tees Television will broadcast on the national network on Sunday. morning_a Sung Eucharist from St. Peter's Anglican Church, Monkwearrnouth, Sunderland.
The church stands on the site of the monastery founded in AD 674 by Benedict Biseop. It was here that the Venerable Bede received his first tutelage under Abbot 'Coelfrid.
Xaverian College master retires
Mr John Dooley, senior geography master at the Xaverian College, Manchester, for the last 26 years, retired on Friday. He was presented with a set of Waterford glasses by his colleagues and a selection of gardening tools by the boys.
No Communion during Soviet harvest
The Committee for Church Affairs in the Soviet Union has instructed bishops and apostolic administrators to cease distribution of Holy Communion during August "because of harvest work." As reported in the Samisdat newsletter, Chronicle of the Catholic Church in Lithuania, this order has greatly angered people.
