be Carmelites SKELETONS discovered on the "'site of the medieval Carmelite friary at Northallerton, ancient county town of the North Riding, are believed to be those of friars of the Middle Ages, Despoiled at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Northallerton friary' in Catholic times held a high place among the 200 religious houses of Yorkshire and the 52 Carmelite friaries of Britain.
Fr. Malachv Lynch. Prior of Aylesford, Kent, has visited the Northallerton site, and has.expressed the hope that some of its stones may be used in work planned by the order.
The memory of the friary is preserved in the Friarage Hospital. which occupies much of the site today, and in the badge of the nurses' training school there, which depicts a friar.
Councillor J. Swain, who has premises at the Northallerton site, has preserved a number of stones from the friary's foundations.
Northallerton was the scene of the Battle of the Standard in 1138, when the English, lcd by Archbishop Thurstan, beat back the invading Scots.
Catholicism returned to Northallerton just over 80 years ago.
