For the first time in 1,000 years, the Bernardine monks of Great St. Bernard Pass left their famous Alpine home on Monday last, December 8, and brought their rescue-trained dogs into the valley to the town of Ycone.
The reason 'for their removal is reported to be lack of food supplies and the economic straits in which the monks have found themselves recently.
Just before abandoning their hospice, the famous refuge for weary mountain travellers, the monks had assisted a French film company which was making a film of Napoleon's march into Italy through the Great St. Bernard Pass in 1793.
It will be recalled that the community at the abbey was reduced some months back.
