_RADICAL MOVE IN ARGENTINA
Bill to repeal AntiCatholic May Laws TAKING President Peron's -Ideclaration of political freedom literally. the Argentine Radical Party has introduced a Bill in Congress to repeal the laws passed in May which authorised the convening of a National Assembly to decide whether the Church should be disestablished.
The Radical Party is supporting the Church on its own initiative. The Hierarchy insist on remaining outside the political arena. The Radicals have hitherto consistently opposed religious education in the schools, and contain in their ranks many hitter anti-clericals.
It is, however. a mixed party and also includes many good Catholics. This latest move would appear to be part of its general programme to tight for the restitution of full constitutional rights for ail in Argentina, with complete freedom of speech and assembly. The Radical leader is Dr. Arturo Frondizi.
In an interview with a Milan magazine representative, President Peron has declared that the burning of Churches in the June riots was " a gesture of barbarity as unfair as it was unjustified." As Chief of Staff and a Catholic, he said, he had offered his help to ecclesiastical authority in repairing the damage at State expense.
From the midst of continuing unrest and obscurity in Buenos Aires have come reports that behind the scenes a three-way struggle for power is going on: Peron seeking to regain his prestige, the Army trying to ease him out of power gently. and continuing activity among those who were at the back of the June 16 revolt.
