VATICAN SYMPHONY CONCERT Pope Chooses Music of Many Nations
On Sunday last Pope Pius XII attended what is probably the first symphony concert of its kind to be arranged personally by a Pope since Renaissance times.
The concert was rendered by the Augustio Orchestra of Rome under the direction of Bernardini Molinari in the Hall of Benedictions at the Vatican.
There were present also Victoria, exQueen of Spain, the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, fifteen Cardinals, Pope Pius XII's parents, a group of gentlemen and ladies of the Italian Court, members of the Diplomatic Corps and numerous other guests— altogether some 1,200 people.
CONCERT BROADCAST The concert was broadcast. The Pope himself had chosen the programme. This included works of Corelli; of Debussy (" The Clouds "); the First Symphony of Beethoven; Schubert's " Unfinished " Symphony; the " Voyage and Death of Siegfried " and the " The Death of Isolde " by Wagner. A dais for the performers was placed at the end of the hall, and the Pope's throne was on the orchestra's left.
The Pope, who followed the concert with close attention, in thanking the musicians said that in this programme music of various nations had been played, which gloriously united them by the same harmonies. He earnestly desired that men, too, among whom to-day there were so many discordances, would at last unite their souls in a sublime harmony : the harmony of Christian peace.
