THE new Universal Catechism of the Catholic Church was published this week in Rome. Bishop David Konstant of Leeds, the only British member of the Catechism's editorial committee, was in Rome at the celebrations to mark its promulgation.
Bishop Konstant said that the new Catechism would be rather different from the "slim volume used in teaching children" that many people associated with. lie said it "contains a comprehensive amount of Catholic doctrine, in the light of the Second Vatican Council, which was held in the 1960s."
Bishop Konstant outlined the main areas covered by the new Catechism as "what we believe, how we celebrate faith in liturgy and sacraments, how we can live a morally faithful life and how arid why we pray."
The Catechism is currently only available in French but the publishers of the English edition hope to make it available in February.
Brian Dooley of Amnesty International was critical of the Catechism's views on the death penalty: "We are very disappointed because not only might it be taken as legitimising state executions in some countries but might also be understood to encourage those countries who do not have the death penalty to introduce it."
