Four held in peace protest action

FOUR members of Cathblic Peace Action were arrested on Monday after they chained themselves to the door of the Ministry of Defence in central London.
The four, including Sr Elizabeth Yates, a Franciscan Missionary of Mary, took part in the non-violent act of civil disobedience in protest against Britain's • nuclear weapons policy.
The incident occurred after members of CPA attended 8am Mass at Westminster Cathedral. They began the liturgy outside and walked from there to the MoD entrance on Horse Guards Avenue.
Once there, the liturgy continued as the four CPA members placed themselves and a lighted candle in front of two of the doors and made a presentation of bread to the MoD workers.
The three people arrested with Sr Yates were Clive Gillam, a financial analyst, Teresa Dean, religious education co-ordinator of Southall parish, and Hanka Watt, a pregnant mother-offour.
The four protesters were later charged with a breach of the peace and will appear in Bow Street Magistrates Court on Monday.
This was the ninth act of civil disobedience at the MoD by members of Catholic Peace Action. CPA believes that the policy of nuclear deterrence is incompatible with the will of God.
Also on Monday, CPA joined with other justice and peace organisations from Southwark, Middlesbrough, Arundel and Brighton and Nottingham in a 72-hour prayer fast and vigil for peace and disarmament in front of Westminster Cathedral.
*Mgr Bruce Kent, vice-president of CND this week urged the Pope to support a nuclear test ban. The text of his telegram was: "Respectfully urge you to give maximum support to present Soviet nuclear test moratorium, fragile hope in progressively dangerous world.
"Please ask other nuclear powers especially United States to reciprocate. Total verifiable test ban now a real possibility given goodwill. Little time remains. In God's name speak now."
