Did Nuncio Visit Hitler Before Leaving Berlin ?
Mussolini's Visit Expected To Outshine Party Congress
From Our German Correspondent ALL CHURCHES OF NUREMBURG, PROTESTANT AND CATHOLIC, WERE COMPELLED LAS'!' MONDAY TO RING THEIR BELLS FOR HALF AN HOUR IN HONOUR OF THE OPENING OF THE NAZI PARTY'S ANNUAL CONGRESS.
The diplomatic representatives of forty-eight countries, including this time the Ambassadors of Great Britain and France and the Charge d'Affaires of the United States, accepted the Nazi Party's invitation to attend the Congress as guests of honour.
The Papal Nuncio, the Soviet Ambassador, and the Legations o/ Norway and Peru declined to be present.
Mgr. Orsenigo, the Papal Nuncio, who left Germany immediately before the Congress, had had during these last weeks several long conversations with Herr von Mackensen, Secretary of State in the Berlin Foreign Office. Those talks dealt with the general relations between the Holy See and the Berlin Government, but particularly with the expulsion of the clergy from German schools. A rumour says that before going to Rome Mgr. Orsenigo was able to sec Herr Hitler in Upper Bavaria. So far it has been impossible to discover whether the report was true.
Hitler's Twelve Speeches
Before the end of the Nuremburg Congress Herr Hitler will have made about a dozen speeches.
In the official programme both Alfred Rosenberg and Dr. Robert Ley are scheduled for four speeches, while Dr. Goebbels will deliver three and Herr Rudolf Hess probably not more than two.
Other Nazi leaders are booked for one speech each. General Goering's name is not on the list. His absence does not necessarily mean that he will remain silent in Nuremburg. There may be some surprise party in his honour.
MUSSOLINI'S VISIT Biggest Army Manoeuvres Since the War
Some of the matters which originally were to be settled in Nuremburg have been
deferred for later discussion. The Party Congress, it is said, loses part of its brilliancy to another event which will follow it in a few weeks' distance and to which the Berlin propaganda offices are busy to draw the attention of the German people and of the whole world—Signor Mussolini's visit to Berchtesgaden, Munich and Berlin.
It is fairly certain that Mussolini will attend also the great manoeuvres which will be the most important held in Germany since the war, and in which the Army, the Navy and the Air Force will co-operate.
Dr. Goebbels, the Minister of Propaganda, is anxious to make the reception for the Italian Dictator the most colossal spectacle that Europe has ever seen.
World Power
The German press makes it clear that Signor Mussolini's visit in Germany which is the first official visit abroad which the Duce has accepted is of an extraordinary importance and is to prove the absolute solidarity of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany in world politics.
It cannot be compared in any way, say the Hitlerite newspapers, with Hitler's visit in Stresa in 1934. At that time Mussolini had not yet achieved the supreme dream of his life, the Italian Empire, and Hitler had not yet broken the chains of the Treaty of Versailles. The meeting of the two most powerful and most dynamic men of contemporary Europe " will demonstrate that the destinies of the world cannot be decided upon without the active help of Fascism and National-Socialism."
Badoglio to See Manoeuvres
The Press and the Radio announce also that this year's military manoeuvres will go far beyond what has so far been seen. While in former years the Army, Navy and Air Force demonstrated their strength and their abilities separately, they will this time co-operate, and Marshall von Blomberg, supreme commander of the armed forces of the Reich, will personally direct the manoeuvres.
It has already been announced that Marshall Badoglio, Chief of the Italian General-Staff, will be present, together with many other leading personalities from the Italian Army and Navy. It is not definitely announced that Mussolini will personally appear, but the Volkischer Beobachter made an allusion in this respect.
