Underground Church is flourishing

HUNDREDS of priests in Slovakia, eluding their persecutors, are still bringing the Mass and the sacraments to the faithful.
Great numbers of priests are in jail. Marty more have disappeared or are working as slave labourers. But the Faith is being kept alive and vigorous through the "underground" Church.
These priests, true heroes of the resistance, move among the people disguised as factory workers, farm workers or miners.
"they visit the families of the faithful. celebrate Mass in isolated houses or farms, or in the depths of the forests.
Faithfully they bring the sacraments to a people whose churches are allowed to open only on Sundays and then for services at which only renegade priests are allowed to officiate --services that are boycotted by the people.
Each resisting priest is a fighter on his own. He has no superiors to guide him, and months may go by before he meets a fellow-priest.
The Slovak Hierarchy have been almost eliminated, at least in so far as the exercise of their rights and powers is concerned. Five Bishops are in prison and four are under close house arrest.
