MR. HENRY CABOT LODGE, the first official U.S. envoy to the Vatican for 20 years, conferred for 40 minutes with the Pope on Saturday on war, peace and the fate of American prisoners of war in Vietnam. "1 Was deeply impressed by the feeling which the Pope has for these men and the tragic situation of their wives," he said after the private meeting.
The meeting was the first official non ceremonial contact between a Pope and an American envoy since 1'150 when Myron C. Taylor stepped down as a special Presidential envoy to the Vatican, Mr. Lodge said he and the Pope discussed "at length" the problem of drugs, prospects of world peace and the plight of American prisoners in North Vietnam.
"Much time wasgiven to consideration for the outlook for peace in the world. Discussions were held on various ways and means of advancing the case of world peace."
Mr. Lodge. 68, former U.S. Ambassador in Saigon, and chief of the American delegation at the Paris peace talks, met Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Villot for 20 minutes on Friday to discuss details of his talks with the Pope.
He is expected to remain in Rome for about one month. President Nixon has said that Mr. Lodge would visit the Vatican two or three times a year to sec the Pope.
