What does the Church have to offer that other denominations don't?
From Mr John Kearney SIR I began reading the article by Ray Knight (Comment, August 3) with some hope. Yes, we cannot blame the decline in Mass attendance on our materialistic society. At the end, however, I was disappointed.
When it came to the theme of "evangelisation" Mr Knight was just as lost as many pundits in the Church today. With the usual "we have moved on" theme, he tells us that "we took it for granted that evangelisation was the province of our parish priests in this country".
Unfortunately that was not the experience of thousands who grew up in the pre-Vatican II Church and I was really surprised to fmd that Mr Knight had been a speaker in the Catholic Evidence Guild, since this organisation, along with the Legion of Mary, the Young Christian Workers, the St Vincent de Paul Society, all contributed to a yearly conversion rate of about 20,000 compared to about 4,000 today.
On the theme of evangelisation Mr Knight gives us an unclear picture of what we are going to do and what we are going to say. It seems we are just going to bring them to Jesus. But so do 25,000 other denominations. What is Catholic evangelisation and how does it differ? Pope Benedict said it the other week: we are going to bring them into the "one true Church".
Is this triumphalistic? No, Christ gave us the truth, and structured a body. the Catholic Church, to keep that truth, and it is that truth that must shine from the Catholic Church. That is the light I want to bring them into to break the power of Satan.
I want Catholic parishes that uphold the teaching of Christ on adultery, which teach young people that with God and the Catholic Church they do not have to become pregnant mothers, fathers before their time, or sex objects that eventually ruin their chances of a happy marriage. I want Catholic parishes that uphold the teaching of Christ on marriage and divorce and that can show that with faith His teachings work and children need not grow up feeling unloved and unwanted.
I want parishes that believe in holiness and the people who go there want to be like St Therese, St Maxmillian Kolbe, St Vincent de Paul, Mother Teresa and thousands of other saints.
I want parishes where people love God so much that the thought of sinning against such a God actually does make them feel guilty and they go to Confession on a regular basis.
When we have such a Church then we will no longer need lectures on evangelisation which have good soundbites but little substance.
Yours faithfully, JOHN KEARNEY Basingstoke, Hants
