LEYLAND CHURCH CONSECRATED

VRANK1NCENSE from the Sultanate of Muscat and -AOman was burned when the new Benedictine church of St. Mary was consecrated at Leyland, Preston, on Saturday, by Archbishop Beck of Liverpool.
The incense was brought by a friend of the parish, Mr. Michael Conroy, a former R.A.F. commander, who had received it as a gift from the Sultan himself.
The consecration of the remarkable new round church was the latest historic event in the annals of a parish which has links with Si. Andrew's. Leyland, whose patronage was granted by Pope John XX1I hack in 1334.
New Arms to commemorate the consecration of the new church
will soon be placed on the bapistery wall. They include the Red Rose of Lancashire, the Cross of St. Andrew and the halo of stars which recall respectively the earlier dedication to St. Andrew and later to the Assumption of St. Mary.
The keys .of St. Peter in the Arms indicate the connection with Ampleforth from whence most of the Leyland community come, and a papal tiara to represent the action of Pope John XXII.
