Catholics lose woman poet
A CATHOLIC poet has died at the age of 75 years.
Elizabeth Jennings was born at Boston, Lincolnshire, on 18 July 1926 but moved soon after with her family to Oxfordshire.
Educated at Rye St Anthony and then at Oxford High School her first encounter with poetry was at the age of 13 when a teacher introduced her to OK
Chesteron's Lepanto. She wrote her first poem soon after. At St Anne' College, Oxford, she read English and included Philip Larkin and Kingsley Amis among her contempories. Antis included several of her early works in their collection — Oxford Poetry ( 1949). He called her "the star of the show, our discovery".
She was always an individual poet even if some of her inspirations — Eliot, Yeats, Auden — were clearly visible. "The best influences", she wrote, "are always springboards towards a style and voice of one's own".
She published four major volumes of her poetry.
