`The DIY Mass is ended. Go in peace,' Cardinal Arinze tells world's faithful

BY SIMON CALDWELL
A seenoa Vatican cardinal has confirmed that the Pope will encourage a far wider provision of the old-rite Mass later this year.
Nigerian-born Cardinal Francis Arinze, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, said the Vatican was preparing a disciplinary document to eradicate liturgical abuses and to ensure the old-rite Tridentine Mass could be far more widely available.
He said the document would target a "laissez faire" attitude among some clergy toward liturgical experimentation and the "do-it-yourself' Masses that were considered by many Catholics to be irreverent.
"We expect the document to be published before Christ
mas," Cardinal Arinze told Inside The Vatican magazine.
"We want to respond to the spiritual hunger and sorrow so many of the faithful have expressed to us because of liturgical celebrations that seemed irreverent and unworthy of true adoration of God.
"You might sum up our document with words that echo the final words of the Mass: 'The do-it-yourself Mass is ended. Go in peace.—

it is understood that the Vatican is keen to achieve reconciliation with people who have left the Church because of liturgical abuses arising from the novus ordo Mass, introduced in 1970.
The Vatican has been asking
the world's bishops to increase their provision of the old-rite Mass, which was introduced in the 16th century by Pope St Pius V and used up until 1962.
The Pope last month lifted restrictions on its celebration in St Peter's Basilica, Rome and also celebrated a Tridentine Mass himself last summer.
Rome has confirmed that tomorrow an old-rite Mass will be celebrated in the Basilica of St Mary Major, Rome, the first time an old-rite Mass will be celebrated in a major Roman basilica in 30 years.
The Mass, which will be preceded by the Rosary, will be presided over by Cardinal Dario Castrillrin Hoyos, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.
