Lenten Opportunity
SIR,-It is now four years since the Holy Father issued his great Encyclical Letter (Mediator Dell on the Sacred Liturgy. In the introduction the Holy Father says . . . " We regret that in some quarters there is little or no interest in the liturgy or understanding of it . . ."
Why should there not be a course of instructions or "conferences " in every parish during Lent? Why are members of congregations who fail to follow the Mass in a LatinEnglish Missal not urged to do so?
The Holy Father tells us how a deepened appreciation of the Liturgy of the Church can assist the noble cause of world peace. Can we afford to neglect the beautiful liturgical doctrine thus set out for our eternal good by the Chief Pastor and Bishop who keeps unwearied watch over the liturg.cal life of the Universal Church?
During the past fifty years the Church in this country has produced some great liturgical scholars and their works deserve to be more widely known and appreciated. A new edition of Dr. Adrian Fortescue's handbook on the Liturgy was issued not long ago. This fine, scholarly work is well within the grasp of the general reader and is most appropriate for Lenten reading.
