Hexham and Newcastle exhibits students' art

Artworks by Catholic students in schools in the Hexham and Newcastle diocese have been well received in an exhibition in the Galilee chapel at Durham Cathedral which ended on January 31.

Students from 11 Catholic schools in the North East painted, sculpted and drew images that they identify with the sacred and holy.

Sara Crawshaw, director of Catholic Partnership South, which organised the show, Images of God, said it had been an opportunity for young artists in schools to explore spirituality through art and to have the privilege of exhibiting in Durham Cathedral. "The work is varied in size, artistic style and discipline," she said. "Students showed incredible flair and skill to put together a genuinely rich collection of work."

Catholic Partnership Schools covers five local authorities and include St Michael's Roman Catholic School, Billingham, St Robert of Newminster Catholic School and Sixth Form College, Washington and St Leonard's Catholic School, Durham.

Art students spent many hours with their art teachers to study historical and powerful images of God across cultures and time.
